Archimedes watch9/5/2023 ![]() The Archimede Pilot 42 GMT is extremely legible in almost all lighting conditions. Position II: setting the time (movement hacks).Position I: GMT hand setting (up), Date setting (down). You can easily grab and pull the crown out to the appropriate position: The large crown with its deep grooves makes adjusting the time and winding very easy, and yet does not dig into your wrist. The large diamond crown has a substantial presence, but adds to the authentic characteristic of a flieger. The finishing and fit of the case is excellent, as you would expect from any Ickler product. ![]() The case design of the Archimede Pilot 42 GMT is kind of frugal, but it is attractive and pragmatic at the same time, reduced to its bare essentials with its brushed bezel flanked by thin, tapering lugs. It is easily worn under the cuffs, which is nice for business fliers. The three-piece brushed stainless-steel case is 42mm in diameter, and due to its height of about 10mm, it does not wear large. Archimede offers their fliegers in different case sizes, different dial variations, movements (automatic, manual and even historical movement like Junghans 687). The interest in this affordable flieger and its reputation has not ceased since then. “For less than $300 delivered you get a beautifully machined 42mm case (not too big, I have 6.5 inch wrists and it fits me perfectly) but with great wrist presence, sapphire crystal, nicely made dial, hands, strap, huge display back, solid 2824-2 movement, metal movement retaining ring, and a highly perceptible quality feel (hard to describe but you know it when you hold it in your hands).” from New Jersey, commented on TimeZone forum: Soon it became clear that the basic Pilot model provided an excellent value for money ratio, and Archimede became a promising brand. The basic pilot watch was shipped from one forum member to another for his opinion and review. We remember that year on various watch forums the Archimede Pilot “pass-around” project started. In 2003, Ickler released the first Archimede watches. Every watch is thoroughly tested before it leaves the factory, and it carries an international two-year warranty. From turning and milling, to polishing and assembling of the multi-part cases, from the mounting of the movements, dials and hands, to the final quality check. Ickler is well known for manufacturing high quality watch cases in Pforzheim workshop for international watch brands. ![]() Thomas relies on his daughter Lisa and son Raphael to manage the four brands – Limes, Autran & Viala, Defakto and Archimede. Today the company is headed by the third generation – Thomas Ickler. In 1947, his two sons rebuilt production, which was destroyed during WW II. After gaining considerable experience, he founded his own watch case manufacture. He had previously worked as head of the manufacturing department for foreign companies. In 1924, Karl Ickler founded Ickler GmbH in Pforzheim, Germany. Before we get to the review, let’s get to know Ickler manufacturer. ![]() Mike received the watch this year and after wearing it few months, he has written a thorough review. Last year Mike and I visited Ickler manufacturer in Pforzheim and he was immediately sold on the Archimede Pilot 42 GMT. As he started to re-build his collection with Stowa, Laco, Damasko, G.Gerlach and Hanhart fliegers, the void for Archimede flieger still remained. Two of the stolen watches were from Archimede. Mike Stuffler, the resident expert on flieger watches and a collector of pilots watches for over 40 years, had his entire watch collection stolen in London while he was stationed there in 2011.
